EasyJet is recruiting seniors to make up for the lack of flight personnel
Affected by recruitment difficulties, the low-cost British company offers hostess and steward positions to people aged 45 and over in the United Kingdom.
Has EasyJet just found a solution to the staff shortage? The British company launched this Wednesday a recruitment campaign for PNC (commercial flight personnel) aimed at people aged 45 and over. Baptized “Empty Nesters(“Empty nests”), it more specifically targets parents whose children have left home and who wish to embark on a new professional challenge.
The low-cost operator has seen a 27% increase in crew aged 45 and over over the past four years, mainly teachers and paramedics undergoing retraining, an easyJet statement said.

No age limit
The vacancies posted are for full-time and part-time positions in the UK based in Bristol, London Luton and London Gatwick only. Among the conditions to respect: to be 18 years old or more (no age limit is indicated), to be between 157.5 and 190 cm tall, to obtain a certificate of physical aptitude from the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA ) or have worked for at least three months in a profession in contact with the public. The starting salary is 22,000 pounds (25,600 €) per year excluding bonuses. The announcements also specify that cabin crew receive 10% of sales made on board, to be shared with the crew.
Like many competitors, easyJet is faced with a lack of personnel which affects both cabin crew and pilots, which this summer resulted in scenes of chaos in several European airports. The airline, which is expected to announce an annual loss at the end of November, has been forced in recent months to remove seats on some of its flights in order to comply with European aviation regulations which require one cabin crew member per 50 passengers and per pair of doors. Thus, in the 156-seat A319s, six seats have been removed from sale, allowing aircraft to take off with three cabin crew members instead of four. Remember that in France, Cabin Crew Members can work up to the age of 55, but this limit differs depending on the country. Beyond this age, they can ask for a reclassification in ground employment.
